Don’t Just Teach People, Give Them Tools

20 December 2011 – In owning and running my small business, there are many times when I feel tired. Tired of repeating myself, tired of correcting simple mistakes and tired of hearing the same problems over and over again.

My “A-ha!” moment came while reading a book called “Mastering the Rockefeller Habits” by Verne Harnish, the founder of Young Entrepreneurs Organization.

“Don’t bother teaching people,” he said, “Give them tools.”

My mind flashed back to instances when I painstakingly repeated my instructions, trying to get my people to understand the “why” behind the process, and educating my employees to try to lift them up to “another level.” And while all of that is nice and necessary if I want to develop my people, it is slow.
